Ambassade Oeganda wint Ambassadeprijs voor Mensenrechten
[English article below] Deze tweejaarlijkse prijs wordt door meer dan 20 Nederlandse maatschappelijke organisaties uitgereikt aan de Nederlandse ambassade die zich het meest proactief, concreet en effectief heeft ingezet voor de verdediging en bevordering van mensenrechten. Op 31 januari ontvangt Karin Boven, ambassadeur te Oeganda, de prijs tijdens een uitreiking op het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken in Den Haag.
Waarom deze prijs?
Wereldwijd staan mensenrechten steeds meer onder druk. Zij die opkomen voor mensenrechten worden geconfronteerd met ongekende vervolging, intimidatie en geweld, zowel fysiek als digitaal. De rol van ambassades is daarom belangrijker dan ooit. Ambassades zijn verantwoordelijk voor de bevordering van mensenrechten, onder meer via de projecten die ze steunen en door middel van hun diplomatieke werk. Zo hebben de lidstaten van de Europese Unie afgesproken dat mensenrechtenverdedigers en het maatschappelijke middenveld proactief moeten worden ondersteund. Met de Ambassadeprijs voor Mensenrechten willen BMO-lidorganisaties – en hun partners wereldwijd – waardering uitspreken voor de Nederlandse ambassade die zich hier proactief voor heeft ingezet in de afgelopen twee jaar.
Winnaar: ambassade Oeganda
Om tot een winnaar te komen is er door het BMO een enquête uitgezet bij het maatschappelijk middenveld waar zij wereldwijd mee samenwerken. Op basis van de inzendingen wordt een kiest een roulerende jury van de ambassadeprijs de winnende ambassade aan de hand van 5 criteria. Uit de inzendingen van partners in Oeganda kwam naar voren dat de ambassade in Oeganda ondanks de soms gevaarlijke context, een actief en zichtbaar pleitbezorger is van mensenrechten. De ambassade in Oeganda is voor veel mensenrechtenverdedigers een veilige plek waar zij elkaar kunnen ontmoeten, essentieel in tijden van ernstig beperkte maatschappelijke ruimte.

De ambassadeur en het ambassadepersoneel zetten zich daarnaast op strategische en proactieve wijze in, aldus Michiel Servaes, juryvoorzitter en directeur van Oxfam Novib. Bijvoorbeeld door zich in samenwerking met gelijkgestemde partners publiekelijk uit te spreken tegen de zorgwekkende LHBTIQ+ wetgeving en door rechtszaken van ten onrechte vervolgde mensenrechtenverdedigers bij te wonen.

Eervolle vermeldingen voor DRC en Polen
De Nederlandse ambassades in Polen en de DRC verdienen een eervolle vermelding voor hun inspanningen om de maatschappelijke ruimte te versterken en de mensenrechten te beschermen. In beide landen worden de rechtsstaat en het respect voor de mensenrechten steeds meer ondermijnd en beperkt. Ondanks de verscheidenheid aan uitdagingen in de landen zijn beide ambassades opgekomen voor de mensenrechten en hebben ze hun betrokkenheid getoond. De ambassades bieden ambassades waardevolle steun aan het lokale maatschappelijk middenveld en blijven zich inzetten om de rechtsstaat en mensenrechten op de agenda te houden. Het is van cruciaal belang dat Nederland daarmee door blijft gaan.

Embassy of Uganda wins Embassy Prize for Human Rights
This biennial prize is awarded by more than 20 Dutch civil society organizations to the Dutch embassy that has been most proactive, concrete and effective in defending and promoting human rights. On January 31, Karin Boven, ambassador to Uganda, receives the prize during an award ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague.
Why this prize?
Human rights are increasingly under pressure worldwide. Those who stand up for human rights face unprecedented persecution, intimidation and violence, both physical and digital. The role of embassies is therefore more important than ever. Embassies are responsible for the promotion of human rights, including through the projects they support and through their diplomatic work. For example, the Member States of the European Union have agreed that human rights defenders and civil society must be proactively supported. With the Embassy Prize for Human Rights, BMO member organizations – and their partners worldwide – want to express appreciation for the Dutch embassy that has proactively committed itself to this over the past two years.
Winner: Embassy Uganda
To come to a winner, the BMO conducted a survey among civil society organizations they work with worldwide. Based on the responses, a rotating jury of the embassy prize chose the winning embassy, based on five criteria. Responses from partners in Uganda showed that the embassy in Uganda is an active and visible advocate of human rights, despite the sometimes dangerous context. Additionally, the embassy in Uganda is a safe place for many human rights defenders to meet: essential in times of severely limited social space.

The ambassador and embassy staff also take action in a strategic and proactive way, according to Michiel Servaes, jury chairperson and director of Oxfam Novib. For example by publicly speaking out against the worrying LGBTIQ+ legislation in collaboration with like-minded partners and by attending trials of wrongfully prosecuted human rights defenders.

Honorable mentions for DRC and Poland
The Dutch embassies in Poland and the DRC deserve an honorable mention for their efforts to strengthen social space and protect human rights. In both countries, the rule of law and respect for human rights are increasingly undermined and limited. Despite the variety of challenges in the countries, both embassies have stood up for human rights and demonstrated their commitment. The embassies provide crucial support to local civil society and continues to keep the rule of law and human rights on the agenda. It is crucial that the Netherlands keeps this up.
